- Polar Continental Shelf Project
From 1959 Annual Report:
- The Polar Continental Shelf Project (PCSP) was set up in 1958 and includes oceanography in its varied programs.
- One of the principle objectives of the PCSP is to carry out a thorough study of the waters of the Arctic Ocean overlying the continental shelf and within the straits and sounds of the Canadian Arctic Archipelago.
- The oceanographic field work carried out in the Arctic Ocean in 1959 was of a reconnaissance and preliminary nature.
- Three complete oceanographic stations were established in 1959, at the northwestern entrance to Prince Gustaf Adolf Sea. The work included wire and echo soundings, temperatures and salinities at all standard depths, bathythermograph casts, current measurements, bottom sampling and studies of the sea ice.
From 1966 Field Program: (HIC N.M. Anderson)
a) Arctic Ocean - reconnaissance survey, controlled by Lambda, to 250 miles off Prince Patrick Island.
b) Hecla and Griper Bays - reconnaissance survey controlled by Lambda.
c) Lincoln Sea, including Dumbell Bay (Alert) in Hi-Fix survey.
1966 Three hydrographers from Central Region were seconded to carry out hydrography in the Arctic Archipelago as part on the Polar Continental shelf project.
1967 The hydrographic team was increased to five experienced hydrographers.
- General Bathymetric Chart of the Ocean
From 1964 Annual Report:
Canada, as a member of the International Hydrographic Bureau (IHB), accepted responsibility in 1958 for compiling bathymetric data (depth measurements) of the Polar area, north of 72 degrees and from the Greenwich Meridian westward to 180 degrees and for Hudson Bay and its approaches. In 1962 at the 8th IHB Conference in Monaco, it was resolved that the plotting sheets of the General Bathymetric Charts of the Oceans (GEBCO) would be compiled by member countries at a prescribed scale to provide information to Member States and to permit publication of these charts at more frequent intervals.
In 1964, staff was made available to start meeting this commitment and the compilation of the Canadian GEBCO plotting is now well on its way.
From 1965 Annual Report:
This new GEBCO unit completed seven plotting sheets for one area of Canadian responsibility and commenced the polar plotting sheets for the western hemisphere for which Canada has also assumed resoncibility.
