Paul Gerard Radakir
1902-1971
Completing his formal education at the Collège de l'Assomption and the École Polytechnique de Montréal, Paul joined the Department of the Interior of the federal government as a draftsman in 1929. His co-workers of that era still remember his excellent penmanship. In 1930, he transferred to the Canadian Hydrographic Service, at that time under the Department of Marine and Fisheries, to make better use of his engineering background.
A meticulous and methodical worker, Paul was employed for many years during his early career on the St. Lawrence River charting projects. He also undertook surveys off the Nova Scotia and Newfoundland coasts, as well as in Georgian Bay. For a few years he held the office position as head of the Chart Distribution office and senior hydrographer in the Nautical Geodesy Section.
Returning to field duties, he was responsible for the complete charting of Lake Winnipegosis and commenced the survey of Lake Winnipeg. In addition to his office duties as officer-in-charge of these parties, he was given the additional responsibility of training many of the new recruits to the Service. As a training officer, he is best remembered for his helpfulness and his ability to instill enthusiasm for the task at hand. Following this, he assumed the position, at headquarters, of head of the Field Sheet Inspection Section, a job demanding thorough knowledge of hydrographic principles and methods for which he was well qualified. He remained in the position until his retirement in august 1967, with the exception of the 1962 field season when he was assigned the task of charting Lake St. John for the benefit of industrial boatmen and pleasure craft owners.
From the time of his retirement from the Service, to within a few weeks preceding his death, Paul, who was fluent in English and French, served various organizations as an interpreter and translator.
He was a talented violinist, but is probably better remembered as an able trumpet player with the brass sections of many local dance bands. He possessed a marvelous baritone voice and was a member of the well-known Department of the Interior all-male choir which, at that time, was directed by the distinguished Ottawa conductor, Cyril Rickwood. He was a featured soloist with this choir and was in demand as a soloist at many church functions.
Paul was well known in local duplicate bridge circles. From his shipboard days, he is still remembered as a fearless "forty-fives" player and a cribbage player of some renown.

Dr. John Rae

Philip Barteaux RAFUSE
At age 67, passed away Monday, December 12, 2005 , in Soldiers' Memorial Hospital, Annapolis Royal. Born in Middleton, he was a son of the late John and Celeste (Barteaux) Rafuse. During a seagoing career of nearly three decades, Philip sailed the world's oceans on merchant and research ships including the Auxiliary Schooner R/V VEMA and the Bedford Institute of Oceanography vessels CSS Baffin, Hudson and Dawson, taking part in a number of significant oceanographic and hydrographic voyages. He held a certificate as a First Class Radio Officer and, following his wireless training in the 1950's, spent two years in the Canadian Arctic at a remote radio site. When at home, he had a strong love for the woodlands of his native Annapolis Valley .

Bruce Richards
Bruce graduated from University of Waterloo in 1977 with a Honours Bachelor of Environmental Studies degree, in Geography. He also holds a Canada Lands Surveyor commission and an Ontario Land Surveyor Certificate of Registration in Hydrography. He started out with Central and Arctic Region of CHS in 1978 as a Marine Cartographer, and in July 1981 he became a Field Hydrographer being involved with hydrographic surveys throughout the Great Lakes, Hudson Bay and the high Arctic. In 1987, he once again joined the Chart Production Division as a Cartographic Supervisor. In 1990, he was acting Manager of Chart Production for Central and Arctic Region.

Capt. (later Admiral Sir) George Henry Richards, C.B., R.R.S., R.N.
Born in 1820, died 1900. Entered the Navy in 1833. After two years of service in the RHADAMANTHUS was appointed to the SULPHUR then proceeding on surveying duties to the Pacific and afterwards was constantly employed on surveying duties in all parts of the world. In 1845, he was promoted to Commander for gallantry in storming the forts on the River Parana. In 1852, he was appointed to the ASSISTANCE under Sir Edward Belcher, which vessel sailed together with the RESOLUTE, NORTH STAR, INTREPID, and PIONEER to the polar regions in search for Sit John Franklin and also for the relief of the ENTERPRISE and INVESTIGATOR which had entered the Arctic through the Bering Sea.
In 1856, Richards commissioned the PLUMPER for the survey of B.C. and arrived at Esquimalt on 9th November 1857. In 1861, he transferred with his staff to the HECATE. The surveys of B.C. continued till 1863 when Richards sailed the HECATE back to England.
In 1863, Richards was appointed Hydrographer of the Navy, a post he held till 1874. During the eleven years in office, Richards carried through many reforms. The examination of Masters and other navigating officers in pilotage, formerly carried out by Trinity House, was transferred to the Hydrographic Department. Possibly the greatest achievement of Richard’s career was the fitting out and launching of the CHALLENGER expedition under Captain, later Sir George Nares. There is no doubt that he was the prime mover in this great scientific expedition which still rates among the most important oceanographical surveys ever undertaken.

I was aboard Kapuskasing as electronics officer for the 1956 season in the Gulf of St. Lawrence Decca survey. I had been with the Decca company in UK before emigrating to Canada in March 1956. Ian Miller a redheaded Scotsman was really in charge of the survey.
When Baffin was ready for service I went to join her in Montreal for the trip to Halifax, unfortunately we encountered very heavy ice conditions with several layers of ice rafting up. In one case we went full astern for 24 hours without moving an inch.She was definitely not an icebreaker, just strengthened for ice. The heeling tanks took several minutes to fill and empty.
As we arrived in Halifax we were sent to help a small DOT vessel trapped in ice off Cornerbrook. We both had to be rescued by a real icebreaker. Some RCN types with a helicopter and many sticks of dynamite went with us, our helicopter had not yet arrived. They flew close to the trapped vessel and drilled holes in the ice, stuffed dynamite in and fired them remotely. Just a fountain of water but no relief for the trapped vessel.
Roger Robitaille retired from the CHS Central Region on March 31, 1997. Roger joined the CHS in 1970 and spent the first seventeen years of his career in field surveys. In 1988, Roger accepted a rotational assignment in cartography. He stayed in the cartographic section becoming one of the region’s first multi-disciplinary hydrographers. A landmark for Roger was the publication in 1996 of his Chart 1435 Cardinal to/à Whaleback Shoal. This complicated, four-compartment chart of a heavily traveled portion of the St. Lawrence River displays Roger’s considerable cartographic achievement.

A.R.(Ab) Rogers
Ab Rogers, Hydrographer, Central Region, retired on Sept. 18, 1981 after a long and distinguished career with the Canadian Hydrographic Service.
Ab joined CHS in June 1950, participating in a variety of surveys encompassing the Eastern Arctic, East Coast of Canada, MacKenzie River, NWT, Alberta and Ontario.
During this time, Ab served on the CSS Kapuskasing, CCGS C.D. Howe, CSS Acadia, MV Theron, ships familiar to his colleagues, certainly names that excite memories of past adventures in far away places.
In 1952, shortly after Ab joined the CHS, he was put in charge of the C.D. Howe carrying out reconnaissance surveys in the Eastern Arctic and Hudson Bay area. For the next eleven years, this was a part of Canada Ab was to become very familiar with. In 1967, Ab left the salt water behind and started the job of charting the fresh waters of the Ottawa River.
In 1970, Ab moved from the Ottawa River with the establishment of Central Region, currently referred to as Bayfield Laboratory for Marine Science and Surveys, and made his home in Burlington. It was shortly thereafter that Ab assumed his present position as OIC of Marine Information Centre and Field Sheet Inspection while still acting as HIC on local surveys. The high quality of field work can be credited to Ab's severe attention to detail and accuracy while inspecting field sheets.
